The Boys of Summer and The Shape of Our Soul!

In Contemplation, Discipleship, Habits, Spiritual Formation by Bizgainey3 Comments

The longer I live, the more I believe the statement pictured above. What we do shapes who we become. Experience proves this to be true time and time again. Most of us believe that our habits or practices reveal what’s in our heart. That may be true, but it fails to acknowledge that our habits also shape our heart!

Baseball season is in full swing, and I love it! I believe baseball is the most aesthetic of all sports. There is an internal – intrinsic – beauty to the rhythm …

Word/Quote of the Week — Surrender and Emily Dickinson

In Poetry, WORD OF THE WEEK by Bizgainey1 Comment

 SURRENDER

A poem by Emily Dickinson

Doubt me, my dim companion!

Why, God would be content

With but a fraction of the love

Poured thee without a stint.

The whole of me, forever,

What more the woman can, —

Say quick, that I may dower thee

With last delight I own!

It cannot be my spirit,

For that was thine before;

I ceded all of dust I knew, —

What opulence the more

Parenting is a deeply rewarding and relentlessly restless journey.  If you are anything like us (Melissa and me), then you have often experienced times of immense parenting joy as well as seasons of unending parenting angst.  Who among us hasn’t felt deep love for our children one minute and wanted to shake them into oblivion the next?

Put simply: parenting is as rewarding and wonderful as it is costly, complex and confusing. It’s no wonder many of us feel like failures, from time to time.  It’s no wonder parents carry …

Calling All Parents: Watch that First Step. It’s a Doozy!!

In Addictions, Community, Marriage, Pornography, Uncategorized by Bizgainey2 Comments

When I was a child, my parents owned a beach house in Cherry Grove, North Carolina. It was common for our entire family – uncles, aunts, grandparents, first cousins, etc. – to descend on this beach house one or two long weekends each year. I loved these times with my family. To this day, they comprise some of my most vibrant childhood memories.

The beach house boasted a large deck with a flight of stairs leading down to the canal. We would often spend hours fishing and swimming in this …
