Pillar Community Church has been interacting with Ruth Barton’s latest book, Life in Christ Together, for a few months. The book is gently nudging us toward a fresh experience of doing life together within the context of ministry and modern life.

Ruth’s text traces the Emmaus road story (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+24%3A13+-+33&version=CEB .).

In chapter eight, she frames the journey of discernment – an ongoing discovery of the presence of Christ – by proposing six intervals or intersections through which we all travel.

When I was a child, my parents owned a beach house in Cherry Grove, North Carolina. It was common for our entire family – uncles, aunts, grandparents, first cousins, etc. – to descend on this beach house one or two long weekends each year. I loved these times with my family. Transforming Community: The Ongoing Project of Us!

My children are all teenagers. As such, I am no longer on edge when they are near a hot stove. I no longer fear they will reach out and touch the glimmering light on the stove top.

Why? Because, by now, they have experienced enough of life to know that fire burns.

How? Because my wife and I taught them at a young age: If you touch something hot, you will get burned.
