And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.

No need for the light of a lamp?

Light without end?  Unending Illumination.

Not today.

Tomorrow?  Likely, no.

Perhaps next year, in ten years, 100 years, who knows?

One day, however, the need for artificial light will end.  One who is light will illumine all.

I long for that day.…

The Journey Of A Burning Heart

In Christian Leadership, Community, Contemplation, Culture, Spiritual Formation, Surrender, Uncategorized by Bizgainey2 Comments

Pillar Community Church has been interacting with Ruth Barton’s latest book, Life in Christ Together, for a few months. The book is gently nudging us toward a fresh experience of doing life together within the context of ministry and modern life.

Ruth’s text traces the Emmaus road story (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+24%3A13+-+33&version=CEB .).

In chapter eight, she frames the journey of discernment – an ongoing discovery of the presence of Christ – by proposing six intervals or intersections through which we all travel.

I sense that each intersection may serve as markers for …

A Poem: Ascension Day, by Malcolm Guite

Ascension Day, Malcolm Guite

We saw his light break through the cloud of glory Whilst we were rooted still in time and place As earth became a part of Heaven’s story And heaven opened to his human face. We saw him go and yet we were not parted He took us with him to the heart of things The heart that broke for all the broken-hearted Is whole and Heaven-centred now, and sings, Sings in the strength that rises out of weakness, Sings through the clouds that veil him from …

“I have been, madam, a wicked creature, as you and all flesh and blood are.” –Shakespeare

These words of Shakespeare sound like the Hebrew prophet, Jeremiah, who said, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who knows how bad it is?”

Our desires – in and of themselves – are not bad, sinful or unnatural.  They are God-given and, when aimed toward God, they produce amazing outcomes. I believe, for example that all of humanity share at least three fundamental desires,

Wisdom For Your Week: Prayer, A Way of Being with God

In Formation, Prayer, Spiritual Formation, Uncategorized, WORD OF THE WEEK by Bizgainey1 Comment

PRAYER, A WAY OF BEING WITH GOD Prayer seems to be Paul’s term for the deep inner posture of one’s being toward God in open receptivity and pliable responsiveness. It is the term he uses when he exhorts us to “pray constantly” (1 Thess 5:17 RSV), to “continue steadfastly in prayer” (Col 4:2 RSV), to “be constant in prayer” (Rom 12:12 RSV). Praying without ceasing obviously presumes an inner posture of being for its fulfillment, a posture that undergirds all the activities and relationships of life. With this term Paul…

Biz and Melissa’s Parental Porn Watch Protocol

Melissa and I have enjoyed sharing our journey as it relates to parenting – specifically parenting with a view toward guarding the treasure of our heart!  Each post has been building up to this one – the one in which we are going to share some of the protocols we have established as a family. While these remain ever changing and always challenged, they represent the core components of our PPWP and provide many moments of discussion and engagement.

You may remember the …

Calling All Parents: Watch that First Step. It’s a Doozy!!

In Addictions, Community, Marriage, Pornography, Uncategorized by Bizgainey2 Comments

When I was a child, my parents owned a beach house in Cherry Grove, North Carolina. It was common for our entire family – uncles, aunts, grandparents, first cousins, etc. – to descend on this beach house one or two long weekends each year. I loved these times with my family. To this day, they comprise some of my most vibrant childhood memories.

The beach house boasted a large deck with a flight of stairs leading down to the canal. We would often spend hours fishing and swimming in this …

Calling All Parents: Porn Watch Protocol May Be A “Modern Family” Necessity

In Marriage, Pornography, Uncategorized by Bizgainey2 Comments

Melissa and I are parents of two boys and a girl, all three well into the young adolescent season of life. We have, as a result, learned and experienced much as it relates to what we – in our home – have dubbed “Porn Watch Protocol.” Porn Watch Protocol (PWP) is our catch phrase (not a product for purchase) for an alertness which orients us toward helping our children guard and protect the treasures of their heart.

The term protocol is intentional.  In our home protocol is an …
