**This article is one I’ve posted before.  I am re-posting it because I am going to circle back around to how a Transforming Pastoral Ministry frames and embodies the Gospel. Our understanding of and experience with the Gospel is vital if our mission is (as I contend) Spiritual Formation and Soul-Care.  I cannot think of any other conversations as important as this one.  Please let me know your thoughts**

Several years ago I attended a funeral for a dear friend who lived and ministered in our community for decades.

And, …

Transforming Pastoral Ministry: Congregational Leadership

I don’t know much about cars.

I do know that ALL wheeled vehicles have axles.  After browsing the internet, I learned that axles are used for steering, driving, and braking.  They are, therefore, crucial for basically every aspect of vehicular transportation.

Further (to sound more knowledgeable than I am), they transfer power and torque from your engine to your wheels.  This means that axles withstand the accelerated forces of driving and braking.

Axles, it seems, always endure stress as they perform the job that makes it possible for me to …

A Story about a Church: Something Has to Change!

Why is that life – that joyful life with Jesus – so hard to experience now?  What is it about the way we are living life that makes such moments exceptional, and why on earth can they not be normative?”

She had me at “why.”

She was right.

In my heart, I sensed that something had to change.…

Imagine Yourself in the Presence of the King

Imagine yourself in the presence of the King of Creation.

Imagine the majestic environment – the rarefied air, trees bustling with beauty and dignity – an atmosphere encased in a feeling of delight and joy!

Imagine sinking your teeth into a delectable piece of fruit, soaked with the fullness of life and the freshness of His touch.

Just beyond the horizon, you spy a crowd of animals: healthy and vibrant, on glorious display – marching in rhythm – beneath the base of …

God Bless Us, Every One!

Just before the light of Christmas morning beams into Scrooge’s newly minted heart, the gloom of Christmas Yet-to-Come settles deep within the bowels of his soul.

Of all the apparitions, this is the one Scrooge fears most.

And, to the reader’s eye, this is certainly the most intimidating Spirit of them all!…

Football, Formation, and Faith, Pt. 5: Vision Precedes Victory

The past few weeks, temps have swelled above 90 degrees with humidity over 70% and a heat index that often makes it feel well over 100 degrees down here in South Florida.

Yet, throughout the South Florida region, football teams are running two-hour+ practices to get ready for the upcoming season.

Why expend so much effort during the most unbearable part of the year?

Vision, that’s why.…

Love as the Experience of Knowing and Being Known

Love, the experience of knowing and being known, is a game-changer!

Love certainly changed the game for me!

I can easily list a host of “loves” that have produced change and transformation in my life:

The love of my parents governed some of the most critical changes in my life from the outset! The love of my wife has picked up where my parents left off. Her deep love has proven to be transformative on a multitude of levels as I have grown – while married to her – into…

Resolutions? No Mas. 2016 is about Life Shaping Desire!

In Desire, Discipleship, Fully Awake, Habits, Spiritual Formation, Surrender, Thanksgiving by Bizgainey3 Comments

2016 Resolutions?  I resolve to remain unresolved!  How’s that??

No mas!  I’m done!  Uncle!  I am, in modern vernacular, tapping out.

I considered putting ink to paper and developing a resolution or two.  Then I spied March’s dissolution in the fogged over windshield of life’s hyped up, over maxed, half-baked January resolution.  Such foresight has given me the wisdom to say no more to the resolution parade.

This year, rather than a long list of short lived resolutions, I am spending some time Reflecting on Life Shaping Desire.  These reflections …

Advent – Unearthing and Aiming Desire as We Wait on and Watch for Him!

In Advent, Consumption, Desire, Discipleship, Formation by Bizgainey1 Comment

C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity, suggests that we are a people of deep and unending desire (https://www.cslewis.com/us).  He further states that our unending quest for satisfaction reveals a deeper and often confounding truth about what it means to be human; what it means to be whole!

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a…
